Hot chocolate with coffee in it – I mean really? Why hasn’t this occurred to me before?  It’s like a mocha with more chocolate than coffee, but just as rich and delicious.  It’s two of the best kinds of caffeine, warmed up into delicious love.  It is not as sweet as traditional hot chocolate, but if you find it necessary you could use a lower percentage chocolate and more sugar.  But this version is rich and deeply flavorful.

So in honor of the coming cold.  And to embrace one of my favorite parts of this season, I give you my hot chocolate experiment of the year. Last year, or more appropriately last hot chocolate season, I shared my Nutella Hot Chocolate with Marshmallow Rum Whipped Cream; but this year we are going cup o’joe meets chocolate goodness & chocolate whip too, because why not?

BARCELONA HOT CHOCOLATE
                          makes large 2 servings

  • 2 cups milk
  • 2 ounces 70% chocolate, chopped
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar, plus more if you like it sweeter
  • 3 Tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 2/3 cup strongly brewed coffee or espresso

CHOCOLATE WHIPPED CREAM
                        makes way more than you need for the above recipe…
but come on – you know you want more!

  • 1 cup whipping cream
  • 3 Tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup confectioners sugar, more or less to taste

DIRECTIONS:  

In a medium bowl with high sides combine Chocolate Whipped Cream ingredients; mix on high with a stand or hand-mixer, until incorporated and whipped to stiff peaks.  About 2 minutes.  Set aside or in the refrigerator for later use.

Combine milk, coffee (warm to room-temp), sugar, chopped chocolate, and cocoa powder in a medium saucepan.  Begin whisking together over medium heat, until chocolate melts, ingredients are all incorporated and reaches optimal drinking temp (raise heat if necessary after ingredients are melted/mixed).

Pour the liquid gold into mugs; dollop with desired amounts of whipped cream; Enjoy!  This would also be good with traditional whipped cream or the Marshmallow Rum Whipped Cream of yore.
