Get your forks out, Y’all – this one is worthy! I keep seeing Angel Food Cake French Toast float across my Pinterest feed. So I had to give a go… this was the result and was the perfect start to a lazy Sunday.
Even if you aren’t a huge Angel Food Cake fan, I encourage you to try this. The texture is amazing and works well with maple syrup.
GRAND ANGEL FOOD FRENCH TOAST
- 1 angel food cake, sliced (10-12 pieces)
- 3 large eggs
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1/4 cup orange juice
- 1 ounce Grand Marnier
- 1 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 Tablespoon Orange zest
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 2-3 tablespoons butter, for griddle/pan
Some options for Toppings:
- whipped cream
- toasted almonds
- powdered sugar
- fresh berries
- maple syrup
Directions: Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat.
In a large bowl, whisk together all ingredients except angel food cake and butter.
When you skillet is ready it is time to start dipping/frying this amazing breakfast:
Place a bit of butter in the skillet/griddle. Gently dip each piece of angel food cake into the egg mixture, fully submerging it and covering all the sides. Make sure to let excess liquid drip off and then place cake on it.
Repeat until you have the desired number of breakfast cakes cookin’; cook until golden, about 2-3 minutes per side.
Make sure to fry each side by also turning it on it’s “back” and get that thick third end of the cake. Add butter to the skillet as needed. Plate up warm and serve with your desired toppings.
This stuff is to die for. The beautiful orange essence from the zest and cognac, the caramelized edges of the cake, and oh yeah… heavenly soft angel food cake! It’s quite the treat. I’m looking forward to recreating some sundae versions with this. It is good enough for breakfast and dessert and comes together so quickly – it’s sure to put some smiles at the table!
